Located in the heart of Alimosho Local Government Area, Abesan Estate stands as a monumental achievement in Nigeria’s housing development history. Recognized as the largest low-cost housing estate in Nigeria, and arguably in West Africa, Abesan Estate is home to a vibrant and diverse community.
A Visionary Project by Lateef Jakande
The inception of Abesan Estate dates back to the early 1980s, during the tenure of Lagos State’s first civilian governor, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande. Under his administration, the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) spearheaded the development of 16 low-income housing estates across the state, with Abesan being a flagship project.
Jakande’s commitment to providing affordable housing led to the construction of over 30,000 housing units within four years, transforming the urban landscape and offering countless families the opportunity to own homes.
Commissioned in December 1983, Abesan Estate was designed to accommodate over 4,500 housing units. Although only 4,272 units were completed, the estate quickly became a bustling hub for low and middle-income earners.
Beyond its size, Abesan Estate is renowned for its rich cultural tapestry, with residents from various backgrounds contributing to a dynamic and cohesive community spirit.
Celebrating Jakande’s Enduring Legacy
In December 2022, Abesan Estate celebrated its 40th anniversary, commemorating four decades of community development and resilience. A statue of Lateef Jakande was unveiled during the celebrations, honoring his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to public service.

While Abesan Estate has faced challenges over the years, including infrastructure decay and the need for modernization, the community’s spirit remains unbroken. Ongoing efforts by residents and stakeholders aim to rejuvenate the estate, ensuring it continues to thrive for future generations.
